In 2018-2019, PenOhio is significantly expanding its emphasis on Grade 7-12 instructional support, and will place tournament sites around Ohio only based on school demand. These advancements are designed to assure that PenOhio's three Core Program Units work in unison to meet the needs of high school teachers and students in light of rising Learning Standards and expectations. To be clear: PenOhio emphasizes instruction. The tournaments we offer support instruction.
PenOhio's Core Program Units are (1) Pre-tournament Online Writing Workshops (8 weeks in the fall); (2) Regional Interscholastic Writing Tournaments (January through early March); and (3) Recognition of the Best at PenOhio's State Tournament in April, and through our eBook of Winners.
eBook of Winners

Each essay is also adjoined by a page of Teaching Tips, so each can be used as a classroom lesson. The full book is available to all PenOhio teacher-coaches with membership. The eBook can be downloaded as a PDF, or as an iBook from the members portal on the PenOhio website. The iBook version can be particularly valuable as an interactive in-class teaching tool.

Based on school demand, PenOhio will be seating Regional Tournaments throughout the State which are within easy reach of all high schools. Regional Tournaments will take place from January through early March 2019. Approximately 50% of the best performers at Regionals will be invited to attend the PenOhio State Finals in April 2019.
Schools should check the Tournaments Tab on the PenOhio website for the latest Regional and State Tournament scheduling information.
PenOhio will offer major Regionals in four quadrants of the State, plus Central Ohio. PenOhio's policy is that no tournament can take place in any region unless there are 10 teams enrolled in a division. In the event that Registration closes on December 31 and less than 10 teams are enrolled in any division at any tournament location, registered schools will be given the opportunity to attend their choice of alternate locations. Should a school choose not to attend another Regional, PenOhio does not offer return of membership fees. Please check the Tournament Tab regularly for the most up-to-date information on 2018-2019 scheduling.
Upon Registration and Payment, PenOhio members gain access to the password-protected page on the PenOhio website called the Coaches' Corner.
The Coaches Corner contains a library of valuable information to help PenOhio coaches do their jobs well, including The PenOhio Tournament Rules of Competition Handbook, Coaches Manual, practice prompts, and eBook of Winners (PDF and iBook downloads). Also contained there is a wealth of information on practical topics, like how to go about raising money to help support your school's writing team, and how to recruit your team. Plus, we've added information to help teachers understand the Holistic Evaluation System that is used to judge work at PenOhio competitions. And finally, The Coaches Corner contains a directory, so members can connect with other PenOhio teachers in their region, share, and learn from one another.
