PENOHIO MAKES MAJOR INVESTMENT IN CURRICULUM & SUPPORT PROGRAMMING DESIGNED TO HELP TEACHERS AND STUDENTS

PenOhio Ups Size, Scope of Standards-Aligned Writing Workshop Series

PenOhio is doubling its commitment to excellence in writing instruction in 2018-2019 by offering twice as much online workshop opportunity for members as last year.

Our belief is that we don't have all the answers about how best to teach writing, but the our award-winning teacher-coaches do.

So, beginning October 9, 2018, and for 8 weeks thereafter, PenOhio will make an after-school forum available online for PenOhio member teachers and students. All sessions will take place from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. according to the following themes:
  • Teaching Tuesdays: Join deeply experienced PenOhio Guest Presenters--all of whom are licensed Ohio ELA teachers--who will walk you through such valuable weekly topics as:
    • Effective use of Holistic Assessment in the classroom
    • Applying and Interpreting PenOhio's Quality, Rank, and Rich Commenting to elevate Individual Writer Performance
    • Techniques for recruiting and strengthening your team
    • Tournament rules and expectations
    • Guidelines to help teachers judge effectively and in ways that best help PenOhio writers

The above video is an example of PenOhio's Writing Workshop Series. The Series is made available to those who register as members of PenOhio.

      • Three weeks into our Teaching Tuesday sessions, we will invite Award-Winning Grand Champion Coaches to share their best practices for teaching writing in the classroom. This will help both students and teachers gain new perspectives from all around the State. Topics covered, in keeping with Ohio's New Learning Standards for Writing:
        • Brainstorming
        • Plot Development
        • Concrete Description & Sensory Detail
        • Figurative Language
        • Power Word Use
        • Effective Use of Modifiers

Garth Holman, founder of teacherfortomorrow.net, leads an instructional session for students and teachers at a PenOhio Regional. Garth is one of the nation's leading teachers in integrating instructional technology in the classroom.

      • Virtual Tournament Thursdays: Each Thursday, students will be given a prompt to write to online, and may submit their writing via PenOhio's Blog for comments by peers. The Blog will be available only to PenOhio members and available on the Coachers Corner portion of the website. Only registered PenOhio participants will be allowed to participate.

        Bootcamp PD Conference Series
        Expansion Planned For 2018-2019

PenOhio's First Annual Full-Day Bootcamp Professional Development Conference, held March 16, 2018, at Oberlin College proved so successful that a major expansion in the series is planned of the series in 2018-2019.

PenOhio's 2nd Annual Bootcamp is tentatively scheduled to kickoff this year's new season on Friday, January 18, 2019, at Oberlin College & Conservatory in Oberlin, Ohio.

According to Erika Pfeiffer, Chair of PenOhio's Program Committee, PenOhio is organizing Bootcamp Conferences in each region of the State, in connection with a major Regional Tournament. "We find that it's easiest for teachers to attend a Friday conference about writing, and then attend a next-day Saturday tournament so that they learning sticks," Pfeiffer said."

Last year's Bootcamp at Oberlin featured keynote addresses by Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author Connie Schultz, New York Times Best-Selling author D. Watkins, and Dr. Janet Bland, Provost of Marietta College. In addition, PenOhio's Bootcamp provided teachers a full day of credit-bearing instruction on use of PenOhio's eBook which is linked to ODE's New Writing Standards.

Dates, times, and locations of 2019 Bootcamps will be published in November 2018, Pfeiffer said.

New York Times Best Selling Author D. Watkins addresses Ohio teachers at PenOhio First Annual Bootcamp at Oberlin College.

Pulitzer Prize Winner Connie Schultz speaks to teachers at Bootcamp about effective ways to help students understand how to convey truth on a page in today's world.

Dr. Janet Bland, Provost at Marietta College, offers creative writing advice. Dr. Bland is a published creative writer, and also Dean of Faculty at Marietta College.
