The 2017 PenOhio Writing Workshop Series provides teachers with a video library of sample mini-lessons for improving instruction, and performance among students, in keeping with Ohio's New Learning Standards for Writing.
Each mini-lesson is about 15 minutes in length, and is hosted by a PenOhio Coach and Ohio English Language Arts teacher recognized for outstanding success in continuously turning out award-winning writers.
The Series covers topics such as:
By mixing and matching video content to Standards-anchored learning objectives, teachers can generate simple, effective methods for helping learners to master key concepts that are crucial to effective writing.
As an example, Ohio's New Learning Standards require attention to this topical strand: "Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well-chosen details, and well-structured event sequences." Should formative assessments reveal weakness on "structure" and "organization" of narratives, the PenOhio video on Plot Development can help you engineer future lessons; and so on.
The PenOhio Writing Workshop Series is designed to serve as a tool for coaching writers toward readiness for PenOhio tournament competition, and may be used for--or to supplement--classroom instruction. The series is available for viewing and download only by members of PenOhio.

Award-Winning Writing Coach Leads Video Workshops
Hudson City Schools teacher Mike Fejes is no stranger to trophies. He, his students, and his writing teams have won so many, in fact, that his school had to build a brand new display case to house them all.
"Year in and year out, Fejes takes home crowns," bemoaned an anonymous peer teacher recently, with a smile of affection. "How does he do it? That's what I want to know!"
Mike's creative writing teams are three-time State Champs of Power of the Pen, the middle school twin to PenOhio. The State Tournament is hosted each May at The College of Wooster and draws about 800 writers from nearly all of Ohio's 88 Counties.
